What an AI call center actually is

An AI call center is not a phone tree with a friendlier voice. It is a voice agent that listens to a caller, understands what they mean, looks up what it needs from your systems, and answers in a normal spoken conversation. No "press 1 for sales." The caller just talks.

Underneath, three things happen in about a second. The agent turns speech into text, decides what to do using a language model connected to your data, and speaks the answer back. Because it runs on software and not on staff, it handles many calls at once, at 2 a.m., on Saturday, during a holiday rush.

At Vandri we build these on our vCore platform, using Soniox speech-to-text tuned for Slovenian and Croatian, LiveKit for the live call, and OpenAI Realtime or Gemini for the reasoning. It all runs on EU hosting.

What it can handle

A well-scoped AI voice agent is good at high-volume, repeatable calls:

  • Inbound support. Answering common questions, checking order or ticket status, resetting things, and routing the rare hard case to a human with context already gathered.
  • Lead qualification. Picking up every inbound call, asking the right questions, and passing warm, qualified leads to sales instead of letting them ring out.
  • Appointment booking. Reading a calendar, offering slots, booking, and sending confirmation.
  • Outbound calls. Reminders, follow-ups, and simple surveys, made in the caller's own language.

It is not meant to replace your best agent on a sensitive complaint. The goal is to take the repetitive volume off people so they handle the calls that need judgment.

Why the language matters more than you think

This is where most "AI phone agent" products fall down in our region. They use speech recognition trained mainly on English and large languages, then treat Slovenian and Croatian as an afterthought. The result is an agent that mishears names, streets, dialect words and anything said in a noisy shop or workshop.

For a caller, one misheard sentence is enough to lose trust and ask for a human. So the language layer is not a nice-to-have. It is the whole product.

Vandri's voice stack uses Soniox speech-to-text tuned specifically for Slovenian and Croatian, including dialects and background noise. That is the difference between a demo that sounds impressive in a quiet office and an agent that survives a real call center on a busy Monday.

When it pays off, and when it does not

An AI call center earns its keep when:

  • You have real call volume, and a chunk of it is repetitive.
  • Calls are being missed, or callers wait too long, or you pay for after-hours coverage you would rather not.
  • The information the agent needs lives in systems you can connect to, like a CRM, ERP or booking tool.

It is a poor fit when your call volume is tiny, when almost every call is unique and emotional, or when there is no clean source of truth for the agent to pull answers from. We will tell you honestly if that is your situation.

How it connects to your business

A voice agent is only as useful as what it can see. Vandri's agents plug into the systems you already run, such as your CRM, ERP, calendar and knowledge base. When the agent needs a fact, it retrieves it from your data, with the same grounding approach we use for our RAG assistants, so answers come from your records rather than being made up.

Everything stays inside EU data residency, with role-based access and audit logs, following GDPR and ISO 27001 principles. For voice specifically, that matters more than most buyers realise, because a call recording stored in the EU is not compliant if a non-EU service processes the audio in the middle. We keep the processing in the EU too.

What a rollout looks like

We do not start with a six-month build. The usual path:

  1. Pick one clear call type, for example inbound booking or first-line support.
  2. Connect the one or two systems the agent needs.
  3. Ship a working agent for that call type, then listen to real calls and tune it.
  4. Expand to more call types once it is proven.

You keep control the whole way. The agent hands off to a human whenever a call goes outside what it should handle.
